Bridgeton City, N.J. - On January 13, at 8:59 p.m., a Bridgeton Station trooper observed a maroon Lincoln Continental Towncar on State Highway 49 and South West Avenue, which matched the description of a BOLO (Be on the Lookout) given out by the Bridgeton Police Department. The car was involved in an incident earlier in the evening when it struck a Bridgeton Police Officer and fled.
The trooper, in a marked State Police troop car, activated lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the suspect car. The driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated. A short time later, the trooper lost sight of the car and decided to terminate the pursuit.
Shortly thereafter, troopers were advised by the Bridgeton Police Department that the suspect car crashed on State Highway 49 eastbound at milepost 25.7. Based on the preliminary investigation, the Lincoln was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on State Highway 49 when the driver lost control attempting to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway to the right, and struck a utility pole.
The driver, Devonte Brooks, 21, from Millville, N.J. was pronounced deceased at the scene. The New Jersey State Police will continue the investigation with assistance from the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s office. There is no additional information available at this time.
